HRT Questions We Hear Often

Is hormone therapy right for everyone?

No. HRT isn't appropriate for everyone. Your provider will review your personal and family history, symptoms, and labs before recommending treatment.

I was told my labs are "normal." Should I still come in?

Yes, if you don't feel like yourself. Normal results don't always tell the whole story. We'll listen to what you're experiencing and look at the full picture.

Do I need to be in menopause to be seen?

No. Many women come in during perimenopause, when symptoms can begin several years before periods stop.

What does it cost?

Consultations are free, and initial hormone labs are $65.

Does estrogen cause uterine cancer?

If you still have your uterus, taking estrogen alone can increase the risk of endometrial cancer because it can cause the uterine lining to thicken. To reduce this risk, we prescribe progesterone along with estrogen when appropriate to help protect the uterine lining.

If I am on birth control, can I still have labs done?

Yes. You can still have hormone labs done while taking birth control. Just be sure to let your provider know what type of birth control you are using, as it can affect how certain hormone results are interpreted.

Can women take testosterone?

Yes. Testosterone is not only a hormone for men. Women naturally produce testosterone as well, and in some cases testosterone therapy may be considered as part of an individualized hormone treatment plan. Your provider will review your symptoms, labs, health history, and goals to determine whether it may be appropriate for you.

Is there a certain age when I should start looking into HRT?

No single age applies to every woman. Hormone therapy is based on the individual, and women can experience hormonal changes at different stages of life. Your symptoms, health history, lab results, and personal goals all help guide the conversation.

Do I have to be in menopause to discuss hormone therapy?

No. You do not have to wait until menopause to talk about your hormones. Perimenopause can begin years before menopause, and symptoms can develop while you are still having menstrual cycles.

Should I stop my birth control before getting labs?

No. Do not stop your birth control solely for hormone testing unless your provider specifically recommends it. Just make sure you let your provider know what type of birth control you are taking so your results can be interpreted appropriately.

Let's talk about how you've been feeling.
